Margaret Waterman Alumnae Group
This University of Michigan Alumnae group was established in 1953 and named after its sponsor, Margaret Lawlor Waterman. When it began, it was part of the Alumni Association’s organization for women, The Alumnae Council. Women joined Waterman to support the advancement of female students, faculty, and alumnae in the university community. Today Waterman membership is open to all who support its mission: to support and promote, through cooperation with Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, the advancement of the interests of the University of Michigan and closer fellowship among alumni/ae, students and friends.
The group’s primary fundraiser is its Town Hall Celebrity Lecture series, which brings four speakers a year to the Ann Arbor campus for a combined lecture and luncheon. The money raised provides scholarship funding for University of Michigan students regardless of gender. The more than $400,000 donated for this purpose has helped over 150 students attain their educational goals.
Message from the President
Welcome to the Waterman Alumnae Group Website!
Established in 1953, the Waterman Alumnae Group continues to be a robust non-profit organization dedicated to charitable and educational purposes. Although the pandemic has caused our organization to adjust our sails and be flexible with in-person programming and pivot to virtual events, our membership numbers remain strong and our main purpose, raising money to provide scholarships for deserving University of Michigan students, remains undeterred. This academic year, we will once again be providing $40,000 in scholarship support to eight students.
Ticket sales to the Waterman Town Hall Celebrity Lecture Series continue to be our primary fundraiser. With the pandemic and our move to virtual events, we have not been able to raise funds from advertisers in our annual program, resulting in a loss of some of our funding for students. We greatly look forward to our return to in-person lunch and lectures for the 2022-2023 year.
That said, incredible speakers have been secured for the 2021-2022 Town Hall Celebrity Lecture Series. I hope you will join or renew your membership so that you can enjoy four virtual (Zoom) lectures that will begin this fall. You can read about our speakers on the Town Hall page. You can also view (and print out) the Town Hall brochure for 2021-22. This year you have the option of joining/renewing by mail or using the secure online registration/renewal process that you can find the link to on the Join Waterman page. Membership is open to all.
We welcome your membership in the Margaret Waterman Alumnae Group and support of our lecture series. Not only will you be enriched with exceptional lectures, but you will be helping to support eight amazing Michigan students in the process.
